Who killed UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson?

Who killed UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson?

The words "delay" and "deny" were scribbled on bullet casings collected at the murder scene, investigators said. Investigators released pictures showing the face of the man they believe killed Brian Thompson outside a Midtown hotel.

The manhunt is on its second day. Here's the latest. Authorities released two images that they said showed the face of the man they believe fatally shot the chief executive of one of the largest health insurers in the country. A senior law enforcement official said he used a fake New Jersey identification to book a room at a hostel on Manhattan's Upper West Side where he stayed before the killing.

As of Thursday, one day after the attack outside a hotel in Midtown Manhattan, the police had not made any arrests. Still, by Thursday evening, the authorities were certainly getting a better bead on the gunman's whereabouts during the days leading up to the shooting, said one senior law enforcement official.

A senior law enforcement official said that the authorities have been flooded with tips from all over the country, and each potentially credible one must be run down. “Every question leads to 100 other questions,” the official said. “This is a solid investigation and I’m confident that he’s going to be an ex-client, an ex-employee, or a conspiracy theorist. But it’s insane labor to find all these different things.”

He is slowly coming into view, said a senior law enforcement official describing the travels to and within New York City of the shooter. The man arrived in New York on an interstate bus from somewhere south of the city on Nov. 24, the official said. He checked into the hostel on the Upper West Side after that, checked out on Nov. 2,9, and checked back in the next day, the official added.

Police don't even know what his name is, two officials briefed on the investigation said.

The shooter was in New York City about 10 days before the killing of Thompson, a senior law-enforcement official said. And the authorities are canvassing many locales and building a timeline of where the shooter was and when the official said.

The shooter used a phony New Jersey identification on 30 November to reserve a room at the Upper West Side hostel where he had also stayed before the killing, one senior law enforcement official said. A print believed to be that of the killer was also found on a water bottle at the scene, but was too smeared to be useful, the official said.

Investigators are looking into the possibility that a cell phone found near the scene of the shooting was, in fact, the gunman's and not a decoy, or a so-called burner phone, a person familiar with the investigation said. The police have not yet accessed the device.

Where does the N.Y.P.D. get its reward money?

The reward posters sprouted up on Manhattan street signs, light poles, and crosswalk signals not long after the chief executive of one of the biggest U.S. health insurers was fatally shot on a Midtown sidewalk on Wednesday morning.

They feature blurry images of a hooded suspect and an eye-catching offer: The New York Police Department, scouring for leads, would pay up to $10,000 for information about the shocking shooting.

We are cooperating fully with the N.Y.P.D. and, by the nature of this investigation being ongoing, can't speak further on it at present, Danielle Brumfitt Norris, spokesperson for the operator of the HI New York City Hostel said. Investigators suspect the individual who shot Thompson stayed at the hostel one night before the slaying.
